What is this so called term “social responsibility” often thrown
around by beatniks, hippies, lobbyist, and other liberal do-gooders?
Well ill tell you what this “so called” term is, it
is a business’ or corporation’s responsibility to give
back to society. Yes we do live in a world where capitalism has
been spreading like a brush fire for centuries. But we also live
in a world, rampant with disease, poverty, disasters and other issues
that often can only be “fixed” by either throwing money
at it or volunteers. And that’s where these “big businesses”
come in to play.
The “big business” I chose to highlight is the Target
Corporation. This altruistic company has actually given so much
back to the U.S. community (and not to mention it’s investors
but that’s another story). After leaving the checkout area
of the Target closest to my home, you can’t possibly miss
this gigantic red sign hovering over you with print that’s
probably font size 1,000,000. It reads “We give over 2 million
dollars to education every week.” Now if that’s not
reason enough to make a sign about then I don’t know what
is, really. The Target Corporation is also a regular contributor
to many other organizations such as the American Red Cross who actually
just awarded Target with their highest financial support honor,
the Circle of Humanitarians award. This was given to Target for
the corporation’s involvement in the recent hurricane devastation
in Florida, New Orleans, and other states affected. The reason I’m
not throwing around numbers and figures donated is because everyone
knows that to get an award from the Red Cross for your donation,
it must be up there. Cough a trillion dollars cough cough, no I’m
only kidding but the number was very generous to say the least.
To truly conclude discussing the Target Corporation’s contribution
to society here and now would be a travesty since they really are
the model corporation when it comes to social responsibility. But
I can conclude this brief essay by noting that if every big business
and corporation were as generous and “responsible” as
Target is, I feel safe to say that the country and world we live
in would be a much better place. Not to rain on a parade or discredit
Target’s philanthropic ways, but don’t forget about
those three little words that help CEOs sleep better at night, tax
deductible donations.
